Description

Canine Ehrlichiosis, Canine Lyme Disease and Canine Anaplasma Disease are three common infectious diseases in dogs, all of which are transmitted by ticks but caused by different pathogens.

Route of transmission:

All three diseases are transmitted through tick bites.

Clinical symptoms:

They may all cause nonspecific symptoms such as fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, joint pain, and enlarged lymph nodes.

Geographic distribution:

These diseases have a global distribution and are especially common in areas where ticks are active.

Pathogen

Canine Ehrlich's disease: caused by Ehrlichia canis.

Canine Lyme disease: caused by Borrelia burgdorferi.

Canine Anaplasmosis: caused by the bacteria Anaplasma.

Specific symptoms

Canine Ehrlichiosis: common symptoms include nosebleeds, bleeding tendencies, and eye problems (e.g., uveitis).

Canine Lyme Disease: Characteristic symptoms include chronic arthritis, lameness, and kidney damage.

Canine Anaplasma disease: the main symptoms are acute anemia, jaundice and splenomegaly.

Diagnostic methods

Blood tests

Canine ehrlichia test: blood smear can observe Ehrlich's bodies, blood biochemistry and complete blood cell count show anemia, thrombocytopenia, etc.

Canine lyme test for dogs: serologic tests detect the presence of antibodies and PCR detects Burkholderia sparsis spirochete DNA.

Canine anaplasma test: blood smears allow direct observation of Anaplasma, blood biochemistry shows acute anemia and hyperbilirubinemia.

PCR assay

The DNA of these pathogens can be efficiently detected by PCR assay with high sensitivity and specificity.

Canine Ehrlichiosis: detects the DNA of Ehrlichia.

Canine Lyme disease: detection of DNA from Burkholderia sparsis spirochetes.

Canine Anaplasma disease: detection of Anaplasma DNA.

Serologic Testing

Used to detect antibodies to help determine if there has been a previous infection with a pathogen.

Canine Ehrlichiosis: detects anti-Ehrlichia antibodies.

Canine Lyme Disease: detects anti-Burkholderia spirochete antibodies.

Canine Anaplasma disease: detection of anti-Anaplasma antibodies.
