At-Home Care : Tips for Dealing with Unhappy Dogs and Eye Discharge or Earwax

Many pet owners may have experienced difficulties in caring for their dogs’ face, dealing with issues like “struggling” or “escaping.” When faced with sudden needs for eye drops or ear cleaning due to conditions like conjunctivitis or otitis externa, it’s crucial to be prepared. In this article, we’ll provide tips for getting dogs accustomed to these routines and points on safely caring for them.

In a healthy dog, eye discharge and earwax are minimal. Of course, changes in climate or environment can cause slight eye discharge or earwax even in healthy dogs. Since it’s challenging to determine whether it’s within the normal range, if eye discharge or earwax is present, it’s advisable to have a check-up at the regular veterinary clinic.

Regular touch and understanding the “normal state” are crucial

Even in healthy dogs, the eyes and ears are visible areas, and slight eye discharge or earwax may cause concern. Moreover, in cases of epiphora (tear staining) caused by the blockage of the nasolacrimal duct, which runs from the inner corner of the eye to the tip of the nose, frequent wiping is necessary to prevent bacterial skin infections. In such cases, use non-alcoholic wet wipes or soft gauze/towel moistened with warm water, gently wiping without rubbing.

Things to note in caring for a dog’s earwax

While earwax is minimal in a healthy dog, dogs with drooping ears or allergic tendencies are prone to otitis externa, requiring ear cleaning. However, it’s unnecessary to use ear cleaners daily, as prolonged use may lead to excessive moisture in the ears, making them more prone to infections. Additionally, since the external ear canal is delicate, it’s best to avoid vigorous cleaning with cotton swabs. If an infection requires treatment, liquid medicine may be introduced into the ear, and excess moisture can be absorbed with cotton balls or soft cotton. Some people use tissues, but this is not recommended as it may damage the ear canal and is less effective at absorbing moisture.

Otitis externa can be caused by bacterial or fungal infections, and in some cases, parasitic mites may be the culprit. Since these conditions are not visible to the naked eye, if anything seems unusual or different, consult a veterinarian for examination.

Tips for Unfazed Care

To care for a dog without resistance, the key is to give “treats” during the process. Furthermore, practicing touching the dog’s entire body regularly helps build a good relationship, making the dog more accepting of various procedures. Silence can heighten tension, so always speak gently, praising with phrases like “good job,” “good boy,” or “well done” while performing the care.

Advanced Tips: Trying Eye Drops

Prepare Treats
Spread paste-like treats, cheese, or wet food on a plate, placing it where the dog can lick. If done with two people, it’s recommended for one to control the plate, positioning it at the nose, while the other administers the eye drops.

Gently Lift the Eyelid from Behind
Attempting to administer eye drops from the front may trigger the dog’s alertness, as the eye drop nozzle or fingers get close to the eye. Lift the eyelid from behind and administer the eye drops to the “white part” of the eye.

Praise with a Gentle Voice
After administering the eye drops, praise with a gentle voice like “well done” or “good boy,” and reward. If possible, cradle the dog on its back, lift the eyelid from behind, and administer the eye drops, praising with “good boy” and rewarding afterward.

For ear care, similar to eye care, use treats and gentle praises like “good boy” during the process. While ear hair might be bothersome, it’s best not to pluck it. Especially when the dog is already experiencing pain or itching due to inflammation, stimulating the area may worsen discomfort. If ear hair entanglement makes cleaning difficult or impedes the application of medication, trim the ear hair.
