SaberVet  Feline Panleukopenia Virus Antigen Rapid Test

The SaberVet Feline Panleucopenia Virus Antigen Rapid Test offered by Antigenne is a lateral flow immunoassay intended for the qualitative detection of specific antigen from Feline Panleucopenia virus in fresh feces or rectal swab sample. The test is useful for determination of FPV infection. It is recommended to use cats with symptoms such as sudden high fever, refractory vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, circulation disturbance and sharp reduction of white blood cells.

Description

Pathological Introduction

Feline panleukopenia is an infectious disease caused by feline parvovirus (FPV) infection and is characterized by high fever, vomiting, severe leukopenia and enteritis, which mainly infects a wide range of animals in the feline and Mustelidae families. The disease is also known as feline distemper.

FPV is highly contagious by contact and has an incubation period of 2-9 days. the clinical symptoms of FPV infection vary according to the age and immune status of the cat at the time of infection. Infection in pregnant female cats can lead to abortion, stillbirth and other reproductive disorders. If the foetus is viable, it usually produces cerebral hypoplasia and/or abnormal retinal development.

The same clinical signs may occur in kittens 3 to 4 weeks of age after birth, with older kittens showing curvilinear gastrointestinal and systemic signs of infection. Very acute FPV infections have a short and acute course and are often fatal within 24h post-infection due to secondary bacteraemia and endotoxaemia with small bowel damage and panleukopenia. Symptoms include abdominal pain, severe depression, and decreased body temperature.

Due to the rapid progression of the disease, more typical gastrointestinal symptoms may not be seen, and retrospective diagnosis can usually be made by histopathological examination in these animals; typical symptoms of acute FPV infection include dehydration, vomiting, abdominal pain, haemorrhagic enteritis and fever, etc. Nearly all kittens die in severe epidemics, and cats with a duration of illness of more than 6 days may recover after a longer period of recovery.

Feline panleukopenia test

PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) test is a vet diagnostic test kit to confirm the infection by detecting the DNA of the virus contained in feces or whole blood. As other pet diagnostic tests, PCR testing method needs to be operated in a specific laboratory environment with professional personnel, while SaberVet Feline Panleukopenia Rapid Test(fpv test) is easy to operate and can get the results within 5-10 minutes, independent of the environment and personnel, and it can be used to complete the initial screening of feline panleukopenia.

The initial screening for feline panleukopenia can be done regardless of the environment and personnel. Usually, the fpv test for cats can be performed more cheaply and quickly than PCR kits.

Therapeutic Regimen of FPV

Sick cats should be fasted from food and water during their illness , Otherwise it may aggravate vomiting, interfere with intestinal cell replication and reduce intestinal bacterial levels. Supportive therapy, supplementation of body fluids and electrolytes to maintain homeostasis, and injection of sensitive antibiotics via the non-intestinal route may be used to prevent bacterial invasion in the damaged gut. Plasma and other colloidal substances may be transfused in some cases of severe fluid imbalance, and antiemetic drugs may be given to sick cats with severe vomiting, etc.
